God C

God C is associated with the direction of north; however, the North Star was not due north as it is today in pre-Columbian times. Even so, God C had a more important role among the Maya. I'll quote from Miller and Taube:146, their book: The Gods and Symbols of Ancient Mexico and the Maya: "God C: Although frequently and erroneously identified as the god of the north star, God C is actually a personification of the concept of sacredness. Thus during both the Classic and Post Classic periods, the portrait of this god provided the phonetic value of ku or ch'u, a pan-Mayan term signifying deity or sacredness."

Answer: The head of God C appears together with planetary symbols in the sky bands in the Madrid Codex (and other places). This would indicate that God C is either a special star or a planet. The phonetic Ku or ch'u probably indicates its religious as well as its stellar importance to the people.
