Roof Eyes

In the Maya world, there are temples that have doorways and roof eaves that show us the serpent of the earth as the entrance to the temples themselves. In Maya, it is a novelty. It was meant to remind us that the people were saved in the caves when the great heat came across the land as the comet Kulkulkan flew by. The gaping maw of the cave was actually a safe haven at that time. Its cool interior saved many from heat prostration and death. (See Shooting Way. One can also find this story about the great heat in the ancient text of Diodorus the Greek historian who wrote about the city of Athens. He stated:

In 426 B.C., Athens was in a heat wave (Etesian) northwest winds did not blow, heat intensified and air grew fiery. Bodies wasted away, fevers came on, sick threw themselves into cisterns and springs to cool themselves. ( XII - 58 - 5 - 6)

Atheneaus, wrote almost the same thing:

Heracleides Lembus in the XXI book of Histories said: In Paeonia and Dardania it rained frogs and so great was their number that they filled the houses and streets (a similar report came from the Riviera in the winter of 1926- 1927) at first people killed them and made the best of it. But soon they even got into the water and food supplies. Dead frogs stunk. It go so bad they finally fled to the country. (Deip, VIII - 333B)

These are but two of the authors who tell us about the ancient heat wave. It appears in India also.

Mahabharata: "It was as if the elements had been unleased. The sun spun round, scorched by the incandescent heat of the weapon, the world reeled in fever. Elephants were set on fire by the heat and ran to and fro in a frenzy to seek protection from the terrible violence. The water boiled, the animals died, the enemy was mown down and the raging of the blaze made the trees collapse in rows as in a forest fire. Elephants made a fearful trumpeting and sank dead to the ground. . .thousands of chariots were destroyed, then a deep silence descended on the sea. The winds. . .the earth grew birght. It was a terrible sight to see. . .never before have we seen such a ghastly weapon (C. Roy, P. Ch. Mahabharata, Calcutta, 1889)

In China, the eyes of Buddha are on the roof and the roof eaves are underneath as teeth, just as the Maya serpent doorways. This a a picture that was featured in the China Daily, an English version of the national newspaper. Was Buddha the protector of the people when the heat wave came? Or the people learn about him afterwards?

In Nepal near Kathmandu is the Swayambhunath Temple. Again with the eyes of Buddha watching over his faithful an protecting them from the evils of the world.

Sometimes in the same area of Kathmandu, the temples only have eyes near the doors. In this way, one can say that the eyes of the god is not only a universal asian concept that stems from the Buddhist religion but also one that is well known to the Maya. There are many questions yet about Buddhism and its passage across Asia. The mythic story is called "Journey to the West." But it is a foreign dynasty that brought this story to Japan and China. Where did it come from?
